Toronto Bookshops:
A Walker’s Map

Whenever I take a walk, I somehow end up in a bookshop. There’s probably a name for this condition — biblioambulism? When I visit a new place, I skip the travel guides. Instead, I mark all the bookshops I can find and wander between them, exploring the city along the way.

What’s so special about bookshops?

  • Always open. No planning needed.
  • No entrance fee or time limit: pop in for 10 minutes or stay for hours.
  • Perfect for getting lost in. Losing track of time can be surprisingly therapeutic.
  • The thrill of the hunt. You never know what treasure you’re going to find. Or what book will find you.
  • Inspiration everywhere: just looking at the covers is a design feast.
  • A chance to talk — ask for a book recommendation or a coffee spot nearby.
  • And if you do run out of shops, you can always buy that guidebook after all.

This map is built around that kind of walk — anchored by bookshops, but open to whatever you discover in between. You’ll also find small riddles — things to notice, to wonder about, or to ask someone nearby.
